Vicki Strachan of Wynne Jones IP will be hosting the next Informals workshop session, entitled “Design filing strategies and on-line patent searching”:

“This workshop session brimming with practical advice for trainees of all levels will commence with a talk exploring design filing strategies and things to look out for, with a focus on EU designs, the Hague International filing system, and the particulars of filing in the US, China, Korea and Japan. You will then be whisked away on a tour of the best practice for online patent searching. This part of the workshop will look at how to maximise the potential from espacenet, patentscope, and the national patent registers, in order to help inventors during the design process determine the potential scope of protection available for an invention and pre-empt an Examiners’ objections.”

Next CIPA Informals South West Regional Event: Cardiff – Friday 1 July 2016

I am delighted to announce that Rhys Williams and Edward Nation of Abel & Imray have kindly agreed to host the next Informals workshop session, entitled “Dealing with the Lay Client”:

“It is likely that your client list includes large IP savvy firms that understand what makes an invention patentable, and the application and prosecution process. But what about a regular Joe from the street? Or a start-up about to enter the world of IP? Have you ever been caught off guard in a client meeting?  This informal seminar aims to prepare Informals for these situations through fun and interactive scenarios based on the personal experiences of attorneys at Abel & Imray.”

Next South West Regional Event: Cardiff – Friday 27 March 2015

Cerian Jones from Urquhart-Dykes & Lord LLP in Cardiff has very generously offered to run a workshop for us, entitled: ‘The A to Z of drafting and filing a UK patent application’. There are only two spaces left, so please contact me at simoncarobene@greavesbrewster.co.uk as soon as possible if you would like to attend!

This will be followed by the long anticipated Cardiff social event starting from 6pm onwards in Brew Dog bar, near to Cardiff Central railway station. For those of you unable to attend the workshop, please feel free to join us for drinks. The social is kindly being subsidised by CIPA, so everyone will get their first drink free!

‘The A to Z of drafting and filing a UK patent application’

This interactive and relaxed session will investigate the whole process of drafting a patent application, from when a client first walks through the door with a new invention right up to the point of filing at the UK IPO/EPO. The session will include advice such as how to structure the specification, what to consider for each section of the document, the minimal requirements for getting a filing date, and thoughts on how to approach drafting (e.g. do you write the claims or description first?). The session will include some core skills practice as well as covering some important legal points and offering practical advice that will be helpful in both exams and practice. A senior UK IPO examiner will also be joining us to provide insight from the Examiner’s perspective.

Times and Locations

1:30pm to 2:30pm – Networking lunch provided by UDL (UDL Cardiff office)
2:30pm to 5:30pm – Workshop by Cerian Jones (UDL Cardiff office)
6pm onwards – Cardiff social event (Brew Dog bar)

Rescheduled: South West Informals event

I have now decided to reschedule tomorrow’s event, as unfortunately I have not yet heard back from anyone who is planning to attend.

Therefore, the first event for the South West will now be taking place on Thursday 4 December at Goldbrick House on Park Street in Bristol at 6pm. I expect it should be fairly quiet, so I propose we meet in the bar on the ground floor. If some of you want to go straight from work and meet a bit earlier, feel free to do so (I have to travel back from Cheddar so 6pm is the earliest I can possibly get there!).

Please remember that this event is kindly being subsidised by the Informals and so everyone who attends will get a free drink! In order that I can gauge numbers, I would appreciate it if you could drop me an email to confirm that you will be attending.
