Congratulations to our 2016 FD4 (P6) Moot Winners

The CIPA Informals FD4 (P6) Moot 2016 held on 20th July saw a strong showing by both counsel for Patentee (Rosemary Lees and Ian Jones of Kilburn & Strode) and counsel for Defendant (Alison Kinch, Matthew Pennington, and David Viita of Sagittarius IP, Withers & Rogers and Dehns, respectively).  In continued tradition the Moot was based on the 1999 P6 paper, in which Gill Bates (Defendant) was accused of infringing a patent claiming image projection apparatus.

The closely-contested hearing went right to the wire.  However, the Judge (Chris Mercer) sided with Patentee, and congratulations go to Rosemary and Ian, who are our 2016 Moot winners. [Although by no means is this a moot success, it deserves to be celebrated- Ed].

Our thanks go to Chris for his continued support of this event, each of the mooters, and all who attended.

David Hobson, Victoria Barker, and Roxna Kapadia (the Moot Organisers)

Informals Moot – 20 July. Register now!

This year’s CIPA Informals moot will be at 5.30pm on 20 July 2016 at CIPA Hall

Opposing teams will argue an infringement and validity case based on a past P6 paper.

Participants will have an opportunity to develop skills in presenting oral arguments and will get feedback on infringement and validity analysis from Chris Mercer, former CIPA President.

The moot is a relatively informal event, and it is no problem at all if you have no prior experience of mooting.  If you have never looked at a P6 paper before, then this is a good an opportunity to do so, especially if you are sitting P6 this year!

For more details, or to register to participate, please email Roxna Kapadia at rkapadia@kilburnstrode.com

Congratulations Moot Winners!

Following the 2015 Informals Moot on Thursday 16th July, congratulations go to Victoria Barker (Dehns), David Hobson (Mathys & Squire) and Roxna Kapadia (Kilburn & Strode) who won the trophy this year.

The opposing team Feng Rao, Sophie Blake and Ryan Lacey (all of D Young), were beaten by a very narrow margin in a closely contested competition.

The Moot was based on the 1999 P6 paper, in which Gill Bates (represented by Victoria, David and Roxna) was accused of infringing the patentee’s patent which concerns an apparatus for projecting an image onto a display surface.  Chris Mercer very kindly judged the Moot once again, and provided a lot of helpful feedback to the mooters.

Thanks go to Chris, all of the mooters, and to everyone who attended to observe.
