Next CIPA Informals South West Regional Event: Cardiff – Friday 1 July 2016

I am delighted to announce that Rhys Williams and Edward Nation of Abel & Imray have kindly agreed to host the next Informals workshop session, entitled “Dealing with the Lay Client”:

“It is likely that your client list includes large IP savvy firms that understand what makes an invention patentable, and the application and prosecution process. But what about a regular Joe from the street? Or a start-up about to enter the world of IP? Have you ever been caught off guard in a client meeting?  This informal seminar aims to prepare Informals for these situations through fun and interactive scenarios based on the personal experiences of attorneys at Abel & Imray.”

Times and Locations:

12:00 (TBC) – Meet at A&I’s Cardiff office (3rd Floor, 3 Assembly Square, Britannia Quay, Cardiff, CF10 4PL)

12:30 to 14:00 – Lunch in Cardiff bay (location TBC)

14:00 to 17:00 – Workshop by Rhys Williams and Edward Nation (held in the Wales Life Sciences Hub)

17:00 onwards – Food and drinks in Cardiff (location TBC)

The meeting room can hold up to about 20 people, so places on the workshop will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Please send an email to simoncarobene@greavesbrewster.co.uk to confirm your place as soon as possible. If you are unable to make the workshop but would like to meet up with us for drinks afterwards, please send me an email and I will forward you details of where we are going closer to the time.

Next South West Regional Event: Bristol – Friday 14 August 2015

Following the hugely successful workshop event in Cardiff earlier this year, Jonathan McCartney and Kim Bayliss at Haseltine Lake have generously agreed to give a workshop on the topic of ‘Writing an Infringement Opinion’.

“This workshop will explore the law surrounding patent infringement in the UK, and will look at how to apply it when writing an infringement opinion. We will briefly discuss the relevant sections of the Patents Act, and will also look at some key cases including Kirin-Amgen. Using a real-life example we will consider claim construction (Can 230mm ever be between 100 to 180mm? And when does a sock fit ‘snugly’?) and we will walk-through the preparation and writing of an infringement opinion for a client. Finally, we’ll be passing on our P6 tips as a boost for those sitting their Finals in October.”

This workshop will take place at Haseltine Lake’s Bristol Office on the afternoon of Friday 14 August, followed afterwards by the Informals Summer BBQ.

Times and Locations:

1:30pm to 2:30pm – Networking lunch
2:30pm to 5pm – Workshop by Jonathan McCartney and Kim Bayliss
5pm onwards – BBQ at Toto’s Wine Bar (subsidised by CIPA)

As places on the workshop are limited, they will be available on a on a first come, first serve basis. Please send an email to simoncarobene@greavesbrewster.co.uk to confirm your place as soon as possible.

Next South West Informals Social: Bristol

Date: Thursday 21 May

Time: 6:30pm
Location
: Pizza Express, Park Street, Bristol

Since 4/5 “experts” agree that we should eat pizza, I have decided that Pizza Express would be an excellent starting point for the next South West social event, this time taking place in Bristol. The meal will be generously subsidised by CIPA (and a Pizza Express discount voucher if I can find one!).

Please let me know by Friday 15 May at the latest if you wish to attend, so that I can book us a table.

I look forward to seeing you soon.
